Cars
Smaller than a utility vehicle, most cars offer better fuel efficiency than larger vehicles. But some use significantly less fuel than others; here they are, sorted by manufacturer.
Hyundai
Hyundai offers a wide range of models with remarkable fuel economy, and the used Hyundai Accent is a perfect example! Depending on whether you choose a manual or automatic transmission, you'll get highway ratings of 6.0 to 6.1 litres per 100 km.
The Elantra is also very fuel efficient, with ratings ranging from 4.7 to 7.6 L/100 km depending on the engine and model you choose. The Sonata (8.2 to 8.8 L/100 km) and the used Veloster (6.9 to 7.1 L/100 km) also have very attractive ratings.
Kia
Over at Kia, several vehicles also offer very reasonable fuel consumption! Just think of the used Rio (5.9 to 6.0 L/100 km), the used Forte and used Forte5 (5.9 to 6.9 L/100 km), and even the used Optima which, despite being a midsize sedan, delivers remarkable fuel efficiency of just 7.1 L/100 km; that drops to 5.2 L/100 km if you go with a hybrid model!
Mazda
Mazda is also betting on fuel-efficient vehicles, and so far, the bet has paid off! The popular Mazda3 has fuel consumption ratings ranging from 7.5 to 8.1 L/100 km, and 8.8 L/100 km if you choose the turbo engine. Finally, the sporty MX-5 delivers fuel efficiency of 8.1 to 8.0 L/100 km, depending on whether you choose a manual or automatic transmission.
Mitsubishi
Of course, the little used Mirage is the fuel-efficient car par excellence! It offers hard-to-beat fuel efficiency of just 5.6 to 5.8 L/100 km, depending on whether the model has a manual or automatic transmission.
Nissan
Finally, with combined fuel consumption of 6.7 L/100 km, the Nissan Versa steals the show, but it's closely followed by the Sentra (6.6/6.9) and the Altima (8.2). Even the majestic used Maxima holds its own very well, with a highway rating under 8.0 L/100 km!
SUVs and crossovers
Many utility vehicles offer surprising fuel efficiency that would make some sedans blush! Here's an overview, again by manufacturer.
Hyundai
At Hyundai, several of the manufacturer's models (Kona, Tucson and Santa Fe) also post very attractive results: 7.5 to 9.0 (Kona), 6.4/8.8 (Tucson) and 6.9/10.8 L/100 km (Santa Fe). Even the rugged Palisade, with its 3 rows of seats and 290 horsepower, comes in at 11.1 L per 100 km.
Kia
At Kia, the popular Niro will help you save at the pump, with highway fuel efficiency of 4.4/4.8 L/100 km. And if you go with the PHEV model, you'll get gas/electric consumption of just 2.25 L/100 km! The Soul also does very well with fuel consumption of 7.8 L/100 km, and the Sportage, at 6.2 to 9.5 L/100 km, also holds its own.
Mazda
Several Mazda SUVs are among the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the market. These include the used CX-3, which compares favourably with the competition thanks to highway fuel consumption ranging from 6.9 to 7.4 L/100 km. The new CX-30 (8.2/9.3) and the CX-5 (8.5/9.8) also hold their own.
Nissan
At Nissan, the Kicks compares favourably with many compact cars, with fuel consumption ratings of just 7.3 and 7.7 L/100 km! Its siblings, the Qashqai and the Rogue, deliver fuel efficiency ranging from 8.0 to 8.3 L/100 km for the former and 7.6 to 7.7 L/100 km for the latter.
The most fuel-efficient types of vehicles
Compact and subcompact cars
In the fuel-efficient compact car segment, the gas-powered Toyota Corolla is easy on fuel at 6.8 L/100 km.
The gas-powered Honda Civic is very frugal at the pump at 6.7 L/100 km. We can also mention the Volkswagen Jetta (7.4 L/100 km) and the Subaru Impreza (8.0 L/100 km).
In short, in this segment, these are the cars that use the least fuel.
Hybrid vehicles
Among hybrid cars, we can't overlook the Toyota Prius (4.8 L/100 km), the Toyota Camry (4.6), the Toyota Corolla Hybrid (4.7) and the Honda Accord Hybrid (5.3), to name just a few.
Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
It's worth noting that the Nissan Leaf, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, and the Tesla Model 3 are particularly economical.
In addition, the Toyota Prius Prime (4.5 L/100 km), the Toyota RAV4 Prime (6.0) and the Ford Escape (5.9) are excellent choices.
Diesel vehicles
In this list, we shouldn't leave out diesel vehicles, especially full-size trucks such as the RAM HD, Silverado 1500 or HD, to name just a few. They'll be economical on the job site and on your weekend getaways.
How can you optimize your vehicle's fuel consumption?
Here are a few useful tips to save fuel. The following list isn't exhaustive, but it gives you a few tricks:
- Get into the habit of accelerating gently. Quick acceleration will waste fuel for nothing.
- Remember to keep a steady speed when you drive. You'll be more efficient and use less fuel.
- Driving at high speeds costs you more at the pump. The faster you go, the faster you burn through gas.
- Plan when you travel. If possible, wait until after the heavy morning and evening traffic to head out.
- Finally, when you slow down on the highway, for example, get into the habit of easing off the accelerator gently.
