Soft top or RF? The classic MX-5 has a fabric top you open by hand in a few seconds. The RF, available since 2017, has a power-retractable hardtop: quieter on the highway and better insulated in winter, with a coupe look when closed.
Model years to know: the current generation (ND) has been sold since 2016. For 2019, the 2.0L engine gained power and revs higher: it is a sought-after turning point. For 2024, the MX-5 got a larger screen, new lights and revised chassis tuning.

What to check before you buy
- The transmission: the MX-5 comes with a manual or an automatic; the listing tells you which.

- The tires: a light rear-wheel-drive car needs good winter tires if you plan to drive it in winter.
