Which Leaf should you buy?

The battery makes all the difference. Since 2018, the Leaf has a 40 kWh battery. The Leaf Plus, available since 2019, has a battery of about 60 kWh and much more range: it is the one to look for if you often drive outside the city.

The trims: S, SV and SL, with their Plus equivalents (S Plus, SV Plus, SL Plus). The SV mainly adds comfort and driver-assistance features; the SL adds leather and a full equipment list.

The generations: the first Leaf (2011 to 2017) has a small battery and short range. The second (2018 to 2025) is the one you will see most often on the used market. An all-new Leaf was launched for 2026.

What to check before you buy

  • Battery health. On 2011 to 2025 Leafs, the battery is air-cooled, with no liquid cooling system, so its capacity is worth measuring. Ask the sales advisor about the battery's condition (capacity bars or a diagnostic report).
  • The DC fast-charging port. These Leafs use the CHAdeMO connector, which is less common than CCS at newer stations: find the CHAdeMO stations on the routes you drive most.
  • Winter range, which drops in extreme cold, as with any electric car.
  • The in-service date and the legal warranty class, shown on each listing.

Warranty, financing and trade-in

In Canada, Nissan covers the Leaf's lithium-ion battery for 8 years or 160,000 km from the in-service date. Capacity-loss coverage depends on the model year: on later Leafs it follows the same 8-year/160,000 km term under Nissan's conditions, while some early 24 kWh Leafs had shorter capacity-loss coverage. Confirm the remaining coverage for that specific Leaf with the sales advisor. Each listing shows a sample payment; your actual rate depends on your credit profile. For your current vehicle, get a trade-in appraisal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Leaf and a Leaf Plus?

The Leaf Plus has a battery of about 60 kWh instead of 40 kWh, so it has more range. The trim name is on each listing.

How much does a used Nissan Leaf cost?

The price varies mostly with the model year, the battery (Leaf or Leaf Plus) and the mileage. Each listing shows the all-in price, plus taxes.

How can I tell if the battery is in good condition?

Ask the sales advisor for the number of capacity bars or a battery diagnostic report, and confirm the remaining battery and capacity-loss coverage for that specific Leaf.

Can a Leaf use DC fast chargers?

Yes, with the CHAdeMO connector. Make sure the fast chargers on your routes offer that connector.
