Used Genesis: luxury that has already taken its depreciation hit

G70, GV70, GV80, GV60: what a used Genesis is really worth in Quebec, which model years to target, what remains of the warranty and how much to budget.

A new luxury car loses a large share of its value in its first three years. That is true for everyone, and it is especially true for a young brand that does not yet have the name recognition of its German rivals. For used-car buyers, that depreciation creates a clear opportunity: Genesis delivers top-tier finish, quietness and equipment, at a used price that remains reasonable. Here is how to choose the right one.

In short

Genesis is Hyundai's luxury division, which became a distinct brand in 2015. In Quebec, four models make up most of the used market: the compact sedan G70, the compact SUV GV70, the large SUV GV80 and the electric crossover GV60, along with the G80 and G90 sedans. Because the brand is recent, the used fleet is young: many units are still covered by the original warranty. Prices vary mainly by model and model year: a G70 a few years old is the entry point to the brand, while a recent high-end SUV costs considerably more. In the Eastern Townships, Genesis is represented in Sherbrooke.

Why look at Genesis on the used market

What strikes you first in a Genesis is the level of finish: substantial materials, precise assembly and effective sound insulation. The brand built its reputation by offering as standard what others charge for as options — heated and ventilated seats, large screens, a full suite of driver aids — including on entry trims. On the used market, that generous equipment is found intact in cars that now cost a fraction of their original price.

The second advantage is less obvious: the brand has only existed since 2015, and its best-selling models here arrived between 2019 and 2023. The used fleet is therefore young, often low-mileage, and frequently still covered by the original warranty. That is a very different risk profile from a ten-year-old German luxury sedan with expensive repairs. For an overview of warranty coverage after purchase, see our guide to extended warranties on used vehicles.

The used Genesis lineup, model by model

The G70 is the lineup's compact sport sedan, which arrived for the 2019 model year: compact footprint, well-sorted chassis, turbocharged four-cylinder or twin-turbo V6 depending on the trim. The GV70, launched for 2022, is its compact SUV counterpart, and it is the brand's most sought-after model in Quebec.

Above it, the GV80 (since the 2021 model year) is positioned as a large luxury SUV, offered with five or seven seats depending on the configuration. The GV60, for its part, is fully electric and shares its architecture with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6. Finally, the G80 and G90 sedans appeal to buyers who traditionally choose large luxury sedans. To place these models among the other candidates in the category, our ranking of used luxury SUVs and our selection of used compact sedans give useful points of comparison.

What depreciation saves you

The math is easy to do yourself: compare, on the listings, the price of a three- or four-year-old GV70 with that of a recent model year in the same trim, or a G70 a few years old with a recent G70. For vehicles from a newer luxury brand, three or four years of depreciation often take a very large share off the new price, while leaving plenty of useful life.

The resulting strategy is simple: target a three- to five-year-old unit, still covered by part of the original warranty, with mileage consistent with its age. Our guide to the mileage to target on a used car gives the benchmarks, and it applies all the more here because these vehicles often serve as a second car — so they drive less than average.

Engines, all-wheel drive and Quebec winters

The engine offering comes down to two families. On one side, the turbocharged four-cylinders (2.0 L on the G70, 2.5 L on the GV70 and GV80), more than enough for daily driving and easier on the fuel bill. On the other, the twin-turbo V6s (3.3 L and 3.5 L), noticeably more powerful, reserved for the upper trims. The GV60, for its part, is electric and can have two motors, depending on the trim.

All-wheel drive is very common on the units sold in Quebec, but not every model and model year has it: confirm it on the vehicle's listing before making the trip. And remember the key point: the drivetrain helps you get moving; the tires provide braking and cornering grip. Our guide AWD, 4x4 or front-wheel drive: what's the difference explains what each system really brings in winter.

All-wheel drive is widespread on the Genesis models sold here, but it is the winter tires that do the braking.

Warranty, maintenance and real running costs

Originally, Genesis stood out with some of the most comprehensive coverage in the luxury segment — a basic warranty of five years or 100,000 kilometres in Canada — and with brand-specific services, such as vehicle pickup for maintenance. Some model years also included routine maintenance for a set period. Since these conditions have changed from year to year, the only information that counts is the coverage actually remaining on the unit you are considering: have it confirmed in writing based on the in-service date.

On the running-cost side, let's stay factual: large-diameter wheels, wide tires, large brakes and the premium fuel recommended on the turbo engines push the cost per kilometre above that of an ordinary compact sedan. Nothing abnormal for a vehicle in this category, but better to have budgeted for it than to discover it at the first tire change.

Reliability and what to look for

Genesis mechanicals share a good part of their engineering with high-end Hyundai and Kia models, which works in favour of parts availability and shop familiarity. Before buying, the process is the same as for any vehicle: check for any recalls in the Transport Canada recalls database, insist on the service logbook and a history report free of major accidents, then inspect the underbody, which our salty winters do not spare.

On the test drive, pay particular attention to the technology, which is plentiful on these models: screens, cameras, driver aids, adaptive suspension if the vehicle has it. Also check the condition of the wheels and tires, often punished by potholes. Our pre-purchase inspection checklist and our guide to reading a CARFAX report and spotting the red flags cover the steps to follow.

Cabin, technology and comfort

The cabin is the brand's main selling point. Surfaces are finished even in the areas you never look at, the driving position is low and enveloping in the G70, more open in the SUVs, and the quietness at highway speed stands comparison with far more expensive models. Physical controls have been kept where they are useful, which makes the controls less tiring to use than in many all-screen rivals.

On the equipment side, depending on the trim you get a large central screen, a head-up display, heated and ventilated seats, a premium sound system and a full array of driver aids. Simply check that the connected features and infotainment system updates work properly during the test drive: it is the kind of detail that is better settled before the purchase than after.

How much to pay for a used Genesis

The price of a used Genesis depends first on the model (the G70 is the entry point, the GV80 the most expensive of the SUVs), then on the model year, trim and mileage. Rather than relying on an average found online, compare real vehicles: when used Genesis models are available in our network, they appear automatically in this section, each with its price, mileage and dealership.

1 / 1

Don't forget to add the taxes to the calculation — our guide to taxes on a used vehicle explains how they apply at a dealership. And if you have a vehicle to trade in, have its value estimated before negotiating: the trade-in reduces the amount on which the taxes are calculated. Our article on a vehicle's trade-in value details how it works.

Genesis against the German benchmarks

Against German compact luxury SUVs of the same age, the GV70 banks on standard equipment and a generally lower used-car price; the German brands, for their part, keep a more established reputation and a denser network. The same reasoning applies to the G70 against German sport sedans: driving pleasure is there on both sides, and the difference comes down mainly to the asking price and to what the specific vehicle has been through.

The best approach is therefore to compare individual vehicles rather than brands: two GV70s from the same model year can be several thousand dollars apart depending on the trim, mileage and history. Take the time to try two or three before deciding.
