Kia Stinger or Genesis G70: a shared platform, two different ownership experiences

They share a platform and use engines with the same displacements. What sets them apart is measured in trunk space, the age of the vehicles available and what's left of the warranty.

You have two listings open at roughly the same price: a 2018 Kia Stinger GT with a twin-turbo V6 and a 2021 Genesis G70 with a four-cylinder. Same group behind both, same type of automatic transmission. It's a choice that comes up often in our inventory, and it's decided on something other than price.

Our 20-second answer

  • Choose the Kia Stinger ifyou often carry bulky loads or travel four-up with luggage: its hatch gives 660 L of cargo space, more than double the G70's 297 L, and every Canadian Stinger has all-wheel drive. It's also the one that offers the V6 at the lowest entry price, in an older vehicle.
  • Choose the Genesis G70 ifthe vehicle's age matters more to you than trunk space: for the same money, it's often newer, its four-cylinder uses less fuel, and the model is still in the Canadian lineup for 2026.
  • For a recent V6, aim for a 2022 or newer G70 3.3T, or a 2022 or 2023 Stinger, whose V6 rises to 368 hp. These are the most expensive examples of both families: today's prices are in the selection below.

A shared platform, with engine choices that vary by model year

According to The Car Guide, the G70 uses the Stinger's rear-wheel-drive platform, shortened. The fuel consumption ratings from Natural Resources Canada also show, on both, engines of the same displacements (3.3 L twin-turbo V6 and 2.0 L turbo) and the same type of 8-speed automatic transmission. Using the same type of transmission does not mean the two cars use an identical transmission unit: check the engine displacement and model year on each vehicle's listing.

On power, the Stinger's V6 produced 365 hp at launch and 368 hp from 2022, according to Kia Canada. The G70's is rated at 365 hp, plus 3 hp more with the variable exhaust of the Sport versions. The G70's 2.0 L turbo delivers 252 hp; Genesis replaced it in 2024 with a 300 hp 2.5 L turbo. The Stinger's 2.0 L, for its part, only appears in the Canadian ratings for 2019. What separates the two cars most is behind the rear seat, in the age of the vehicles available and in the future of each model.

Tipping point no. 1: hatch or trunk

The Stinger is a hatchback sedan: the whole rear window lifts with the hatch. The Car Guide lists 660 L of cargo space, and up to 1,158 L with the rear seat folded. The G70 keeps a conventional 297 L trunk, with a compact sedan's opening.

The Stinger is also 145 mm longer, with a 70 mm longer wheelbase, which mainly benefits the rear seats. Natural Resources Canada in fact classes it as a mid-size car, and the G70 as a compact.

Our advice: bring your own bike, cooler, stroller, hockey bag or suitcase to the test drive and check how it fits. This criterion can tip your decision, and it can't be judged from a spec sheet.

Tipping point no. 2: a V6 or a newer car for the same money

The typical dilemma comes up at a similar price: a 2018 Stinger GT with the V6, or a 2021 G70 2.0T with the four-cylinder, three years younger. Younger doesn't mean fewer kilometres: a newer G70 can show more kilometres than an older Stinger. Compare the mileage, then the equipment list of each listing, since a GT and an Elite don't come with the same features.

The G70 has the advantage in fuel consumption. Natural Resources Canada rates the 2018 Stinger at 11.3 L/100 km combined, versus 10.1 for the all-wheel-drive 2021 G70 2.0T. The 1.2 L/100 km gap represents about 240 litres over 20,000 km. The Stinger is also heavier than the G70, according to The Car Guide's spec sheets. That extra weight puts more demand on the brakes and tires.

The lowest-priced V6 is usually found among the 2018 Stingers, often with high mileage. At that point, the maintenance history matters more than the badge on the grille.

Comparing Stinger and G70 prices properly

When we have them in stock, our used Stingers and G70s appear below, pulled directly from our inventory: each card shows the model year, the version, the mileage, today's price and the Groupe Beaucage dealership where the vehicle is located. A sold vehicle disappears from the list.

1 / 1

To follow new arrivals, the Kia Stinger and Genesis G70 pages show the available inventory and today's prices. A current-model-year G70 can be classed as used with very few kilometres: it then makes more sense to compare it with a new G70, since no Stinger exists after 2023.

Tipping point no. 3: what's left of the warranty, and the model's future

At Kia, the Canadian warranty manual provides a comprehensive limited warranty of 60 months or 100,000 km, whichever comes first, with exclusions (normal wear, maintenance, tires), and a separate powertrain warranty. It states that the remaining portion transfers to subsequent owners. A 2018 Stinger is out of the 60-month window by age. For a 2022 or 2023 Stinger, it all depends on the in-service date and the mileage: have them confirmed with the VIN.

At Genesis, the Canadian warranty page lists a comprehensive limited warranty of 5 years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first, and a powertrain warranty of 5 years or 100,000 km. Genesis Canada states that the second and subsequent owners benefit from the powertrain warranty until it expires, and that roadside assistance stays with the vehicle. The page doesn't say whether the comprehensive warranty transfers: ask Genesis Estrie to confirm it for the example you're considering. The most recent G70s are the ones most likely to retain a good share of it.

Then there's the future. Kia ended Stinger production after the 2023 model year: every used Stinger is a 2018 to 2023 model, and the selection will only tighten. The G70, for its part, still appears in Natural Resources Canada's 2026 ratings.

For recalls, proceed in three steps. Transport Canada's database is searched by make, model and year: it tells you which recalls affect the model year. The Kia Canada and Genesis Canada tools then check the example's VIN. Finally, ask the seller for proof of the work done. Our guide to checking recalls by VIN details the process.

Winter: all-wheel drive everywhere, with one exception

Natural Resources Canada's ratings list no Stinger without all-wheel drive, and Kia Canada presented it as standard in 2022. All automatic G70 models have all-wheel drive; only the 2.0T with the manual gearbox from 2019 to 2021 is rear-wheel drive. The drivetrain is shown on each example's listing.

A practical detail: the tires fitted vary from one example to the next, and a sports sedan can arrive on summer tires. Check the tires on the listing, budget for a set of winter tires if needed, or ask before the test drive. For the difference between the systems, read our article on all-wheel drive, 4x4 and front-wheel drive.

Every Canadian Stinger has all-wheel drive; the difference in winter will mostly come down to the tires fitted.

What to check on the test drive

On a Stinger

  • Check that the hatch opens fully, stays up and closes easily. The struts wear out over the years.
  • All four tires: same brand, same model, comparable wear. On an all-wheel-drive car, matching tires matter as much for the drivetrain as they do for grip.
  • A tight U-turn at low speed: no clunking or shuddering from the drivetrain.
  • The maintenance history, especially past 100,000 km; our article on how to read a CARFAX reporthelps you spot what's missing.

On a G70

  • Try the rear seats with the people who will actually ride with you: it is a compact, and the difference from the Stinger comes down to centimetres.
  • Getting in and out: the seating position is low, so check that it suits you if you get in and out often.
  • The trunk with your bulkiest piece of luggage, for the reason given above.
  • On a 3.3T, the V6's response at full throttle, then the same acceleration in comfort mode.

Assess the upholstery and controls once you are seated and have adjusted your driving position: allow ten minutes parked before driving.

The verdict, profile by profile

If you often carry bulky loads, the Stinger has the edge, with more than double the cargo volume. If you want the V6 at the lowest price, it's usually still the Stinger, with a 2018 GT, provided you accept an older example and go through its history carefully. If you want the newest vehicle your budget allows or lower fuel consumption, the G70 2.0T comes out ahead. And if you're after a nearly new car, a recent low-mileage G70 is the most direct route, since no Stinger was produced after 2023.

Where to see them

Our used G70s are most often found at Genesis Estrie, 4757 boulevard Bourque, Sherbrooke. Stingers can be found at any of the Groupe Beaucage dealerships. An example can be moved from one dealership to another: confirm the city on the listing before hitting the road.

Have a vehicle to trade in? You can have your current vehicle appraised online before your visit, and compare loan terms in our used-car financing guide. For the brand as a whole, our guide to used Genesis vehicles also covers the GV70 and GV80 SUVs; for other sports cars, see the used sports cars that age well. And if a family sedan appeals to you more, our Kia K5 or Hyundai Sonata showdown follows the same logic.

Frequently asked questions

The Stinger is no longer made. Is that a problem for getting it serviced?

Kia ended production after the 2023 model year, but the car is still serviced by the Kia network, including our dealerships in Sherbrooke, Magog, Granby, Cowansville and Drummondville. A 3.3 L twin-turbo V6 of the same displacement also powers the Genesis G70, still offered in the Canadian lineup for 2026. Our take: discontinuation mainly affects the selection of cars available, which will no longer be replenished by new production, rather than routine maintenance.

Is there a G70 with a manual gearbox?

Yes. Natural Resources Canada's ratings list a rear-wheel-drive 2.0 L G70 with a 6-speed manual for 2019, 2020 and 2021. It's rare on the used market. The Stinger, for its part, was never offered with a manual in Canada.

Are the Stingers, G70s and prices in this article up to date?

Yes. The Stingers and G70s shown in this article come directly from our inventory: a sold vehicle disappears from the list, and the price on each card is the one on its listing.
